I was going to skip Fleur Friday today figuring there are already so many posts this week with our focus on South America and the floral trade. This was until I looked at the calendar and saw it is October 8 – my grandmother’s birthday. My grandmother is the person who instilled this deep love of flowers in me, she’s the person who gave me this gift. (She also taught me how to bake and those who know me well know I’m a good baker!) Today would have been her 101st birthday! Sadly, she left us 10 years ago and barely a day goes by when I don’t think about her. I started wondering about what photo I could post that would represent her, really she loved so many flowers. She had the most amazing rose garden! Rows and rows of roses in the backyard. Really, who needs grass? Mixed between the roses were day lilies, bearded irises, a few lilac bushes off to the side and one hydrangea bush. She always kept containers of glads, one container sat in the front yard near the front door and it was filled with the brightest orange glads I’ve ever seen. Oh how I loved spending my summers as a child with her and playing in that garden every day.
After college (@ UCSB) I returned to San Francisco where I worked at a software company. On weekends I often headed up north to visit w/ her & my parents. Every Sunday she’d have my bouquet of garden roses packed up and ready to take back to SF. I’d take the roses to work on Monday morning and place them on my desk. The scent would float through the office & everyone would comment on how pleasant it was.
Gosh, I have tears in my eyes as I type this…
