The brilliant floral and travel photographer Georgianna Lane has released a new book and it’s a real beauty! The title is Paris in Bloom and can be ordered from Amazon, or for more information be sure to check out Geogianna’s website.
The book offers 160 pages of stunning photography by Georgianna as she shares two of her loves – Paris & Flowers. In Georgianna’s words “this book is my love letter to the French capital, an unapologetically romantic celebration of her abundant floral charm.” Definitely grab a copy if you are planning a trip to Paris as she outlines her favorite Parks & Gardens, Floral Boutiques, Market Flowers, and Floral Displays to visit! There is also a beautiful step-by-step feature demonstrating how to create a lovely French styled floral arrangement designed Laetitia Mayor of Floresie.
This book is a visual treat – if you love Paris or if you love spring flowers or if you love beautiful photography then you’ll LOVE this book!

Paris In Bloom - Georgianna Lane - Field Guide to Blooming Branches

One of my favorite features of the book is this: Field Guide to Common Spring-Blooming Trees and Shrubs in Paris. I never know the name of flowering trees & shrubs so this is just perfect!!

Paris in Bloom - Georgianna Lane - Florist shops to visit in Paris

Georgianna included a list of suggested Floral Boutiques to visit, needless to say I will be taking the list with me on my next trip to Paris!

Book Club :: In the Company of Women

In the Company of Women: Inspiration and Advice from over 100 Makers, Artists, and Entrepreneurs

In The Company Of Women By Grace Bonney

Hands-down one of my favorite books right now, it sits on my desk and whenever I need a break from the computer or an inspirational kick I pick up this book and read one of the interviews. As the title says – 100 Makers, Artists, and Entrepreneurs, are interviewed in this book – Grace asked them great questions that speak to my creative entrepreneur mind. Plus, the imagery is bright and crisp and equally inspiring as the text.
Be sure to add this one to your book list, it’s a keeper.

Book Review :: Flowers with Southern Lady

Book - Flowers with Southern Lady

I’ve spent a few hours browsing over the lovely arrangements in this new book released by Southern Lady magazineFlowers with Southern Lady. Its 134 pages are packed full of gorgeous, full color images of floral designs plus, a couple of “how-to’s” on how to create some of the looks. The book is definitely geared towards home entertaining, or event entertaining although quite a few of the designs could be used as inspiration for wedding reception looks.
What I’ve particularly enjoyed are the bright colors used for the designs, I suppose a wedding season heavy in “blush” will make many of us crave a bit of brightness?! I also quite enjoyed the variety of containers which were used to complement the flowers, unique and a good variety. The book also includes information on Tools of The Trade & Helpful Tips which are nice reminders for floral pros on mechanics used to create our floral designs.

Flowers With Southern Lady Book

The book does flow through the seasons, starting with spring and ending with winter. I’m a sucker for a big, lush, bright red, traditional Christmas floral design with Red Roses & Red Berries so the last pages of this book did make me happy!

Book Review :: Fresh From The Field Wedding Flowers

Fresh from the Field Wedding Flowers by Lynn Byczynski & Erin Benzakein

Flower farmers extraordinaire Lynn Byczynski and Erin Benzakein have come together to create a fantastic resource for the floral industry, Fresh from the Field Wedding Flowers. I knew the book was about using local and sustainable flowers for weddings, but wasn’t sure exactly what information the authors would be covering. The book was written with the purpose of educating a marrying couple on how to select and use locally grown flowers. However, I can honestly say that any aspiring flower farmer or floral designer will find this book a fantastic resource. First of all, the book is packed full of gorgeous images—shots from the USA, Canada and the UK of beautiful flowers and floral arrangements created using locally grown product. I found myself flipping through the pages a few times just to look at the pretty bouquets.

Floret Flower Farm - bronze compote flower arrangement of orange peach garden roses, tomatoes, cranberry viburnum, red ranunculus, nasturtium

The authors have included a very helpful guide about the “ingredients” used in the designs—they give both the Latin and common name of the flower, how to pronounce it, what zone it grows in and when it blooms. After the introduction to the flower they give a description of how to grow and when to harvest it. I found this particularly interesting as I’m preparing my own cutting garden! There is a nice section on Floral Design Basics where aesthetics and mechanics are explained, along with tools commonly used in floral designing. Yes, there is a section called For the DIY Wedding to assist a bride in creating her own designs, yet I found the information to be very comprehensive—much of it would be useful to the novice floral designer who is still learning.

Floret Flower Farm - Pink Bridal Bouquet of pink garden roses, ranunculus, dahlias, cranberry viburnum and honeysuckle

Erin has created 4 videos, which come on a DVD included with the book. The videos are well done and quite enjoyable to watch as she instructs the viewer on how to create a bridal bouquet, boutonnieres and two centerpieces. Overall I found the book to be very useful and informative. I would highly recommend it to those of you who are beginning flower farmers and floral designers; the care & handling and designing discussions are helpful.

Book Review of How to Plan your Wedding by Paula Pryke

Paula Pryke, How to plan your wedding book cover

Paula Pryke has released her latest book, How to Plan Your Wedding, book number 16 for those of you keeping track! This book is a bit different than the others, this one is written for a bride planning a wedding.

I asked Paula, we’ve known you to write 15 previous books focused on ideas for the floral designer industry, this book is different as it is created for the bride, why were you inspired to create this book?
“Weddings have become so diverse and have changed totally in the last ten years. Although there is a lot of wonderful advice on the internet, I thought there were still people like me who like to hand write advice or reminders in a note-book style. I also think that all the blogs, pinterest, websites can be quite intimidating and so I wanted simplify things.
I have gleaned so much information about weddings in the last 26 years of working on them and since my own! Also, I often meet people who are planning weddings of all ages who just don’t know quite how to get started, so I wanted to write a guide that would help them through the exciting process.”

I feel the same as Paula, even in this age of the internet & computers, I still like to hand-write out my notes and I adore the thought of creating a lovely keepsake to remember this special day. In fact, there is even a space towards the end of the notebook where the bride can record memories of the day, such a nice touch! Whereas other planning binders are usually large & bulky, How To Plan Your Wedding is the perfect size notebook which can be slipped into a purse and taken to vendor appointments.

Now if you are a floral designer (which you probably are, considering you are reading this blog!) and are wondering if you’d enjoy this book, I can tell you – Yes! I found myself thoroughly enjoying each and every page, Paula has shared many new floral designs in the book. The book really is packed full of beautiful and inspiration images of floral arrangements.

Of course, I asked Paula what her next project is and she says – “I have a new book on Wedding Flowers out in January 2015. I have just finished the photography after 13th months! My new book out next year is also focused on weddings so I feel I have been totally immersed in weddings. I’ve been eating, sleeping and dreaming weddings and of course working on them!”
