Hello friends!
I’m thrilled to share our latest Dahlia Collections with you! This 2022 season there are THIRTEEN collections available. Two of the collections are new this year – Marigot and Cuenca. Cuenca is a color saturated, bold and fun design with all ball dahlias – these will look fabulous growing in your flower garden! If tropical hues are more your style, be sure to check out Marigot where the colors are banana yellow, guava, mango and papaya all in one! This collection will add a sunny and sweet pop of color to your garden.
A bit of background behind these collections. Five or so years ago I met with Longfield Gardens to discuss the florist / home gardener. What would it be like to grow dahlias for my own floral arrangements? Which varieties would I be attracted to for design, be it the size of the bloom, the color, the shape? If you’ve been visiting Flirty Fleurs for awhile you know I enjoy a good experiment! So off and running we were, me growing the dahlias in my garden, caring and nurturing them and getting comfortable cutting them at the right stage for my designs. Each season we select a new color palette for me to grow, I work with those and the carry-overs from the previous years. I learn something new each year, I have found some varieties that work great for designing and I’ve come across a few that may look great in the garden and not so great as a designer’s flower (those didn’t make it into any collections).
Here’s a snapshot of the Dahlia Collections we have agreed upon for the 2022 growing season!
While I enjoyed all the varieties I grew this year, two really stood out to me – Totally Tangerine and Zundert Mystery Fox. Totally Tangerine is fun with the open face and single petals, fabulous colors that add a splash to arrangements, long lasting considering they are single petal form, super long stems, and the plant is a prolific bloomer. Zundert Mystery Fox is a prolific bloom, adorable shape and sized ball dahlia that looks fabulous in arrangements, a great warm orange color. Highly recommend adding both of them to your garden.
If you are still hanging in with me and still looking for more to read about Dahlias, I suggest jumping over to the Longfield Gardens website and check out the write-up they posted about my weather trials of this past season. Click here to read the post.
Oh and one more thing — just in case you are wondering what I have planned for the 2022 dahlia garden, these are the varieties I have ordered:
