flirty fleurs floral industry blog

Your name: Heather Robinson
Your Business name: Heather Floral Design (just started Events Inspired –
special event décor & floral Design)
Your Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

How did you start your business?
I did it the way you really shouldn’t. Found a shop for sale, bought it and
jumped into the retail flower shop business feet first at Christmas! Huge
Learning Curve, but teaches you things really quickly! For those of us who
really are good at making things pretty, money matters are a bit of a
query….so you learn fast!

What is your design aesthetic?
I love trying to keep thinks flowing. A natural line to it, with a little
tension thrown in to keep it interesting. Kind of like myself. I love
mixing traditional with modern, a contemporary arrangement in a renascence
container.

What inspires you?
Fashion, Nature, Colours. Music. I think anything can inspire you if your
mind is always open to it. Sometimes you just can’t get into a design…and
that is okay, focus on what you know. Most of the time, when you focus on
your practice, the inspiration will just start without you even knowing it!

What are the trends, flowers & colors that are unique to your region?
Us Canadians can be so boring. And it is so sad, because people still want
the Roundy moundy baby’s breath Teleflora designs that they are use too. We
are starting to get there now with some younger more chic designers getting
into the business. What’s nice about Ontario is the fall weddings, and all
the colours you can really use. Reds, oranges, yellow, bronze, copper….it
really is a beautiful time of year. Our Cedar is pretty nice too!

Are you a retail shop, studio/warehouse or home based?
I am now home based. Only for a couple months. I am in transition from a
retail based location to a studio. Retail business was not my thing. And I
find now that I am not stuck at a shop all day I have been able to focus
more on my clients and on my art rather than on if the cooler is stocked and
if I have enough nick knacks to make the store look pretty. I am in the
process of looking for a space, because I feel you need to have an area that
is your creative outlet, and that shouldn’t necessarily be your home.

Do you offer any services in addition to floral designs?
I have just started offering linens draping, accessories and all that jazz.
It is going well. And I find more brides like the one stop shop!

What does your toolbox look like?
It’s a coffee can…..seriously….I have wire cutters, scissors, a
Victorinox knife (curved blade), pencils, and an unruly mound of wire. I
also have a drawer with all my bling and sticks and goodies.

What tool in your toolbox can’t you live without?
My knife….and the bling

What’s your favorite flower?
Garden roses. The fragrance is heavenly and they look like you could make a
pillow out of them and have the most amazing sleep.

Anything else you’d like to share with Flirty Fleurs followers?
Follow your dreams. If I had never quit my job, went back to school, and
jumped into a retail shop, I would have never been doing what my life’s
passion is. It is a scary road, and it takes a lot of work. I’m still
working hard to succeed. But believe I will, and I think that is all
someone needs! Just the dream.
