Your name: Marti Thompson
Your Business name: Marti’s Floral Designs
Your Location: 915 Monmouth Newport, KY
How did you start your business?
I have always enjoyed throwing parties but I always received the most pleasure from the florals. They add the extra touch. I love to bring in unexpected touches in the containers and textures. It is what makes it memorable and unique.
How many years have you been in business?
I started in 2008. I had quit my day time job in 2007 to be a stay at home mom and quickly needed to fill my creative urges on the side. It quickly became a full time job and I love it!
What is your design aesthetic?
I really like for the flowers to be the icing on the cake. I love to bring in different containers, methods to make the flowers shine. When I design a wedding, I do it to reflect the couple. I have a method to the madness and have clients question me about it all the time. I don’t work from a “look book”. I ask them who they are, what they enjoy, and so on. I have attended my fair share of weddings that are the same old same old. I am not a flower factory that pumps out the same arrangement over and over.
How do you create your style and where do you draw your inspiration?
My inspiration is mainly from my clients. I love to search real weddings. It is crazy the things that people come up with.
What are the trends, flowers & colors that are unique to your region?
Cincinnati is pretty traditional. I am not originally from here so it is hard to see how things never change here. Just like Mark Twain said, “If I knew the world was coming to an end, I would go to Cincinnati because everything happens ten years later in Cincinnati.” I love being apart of the wonderful vendors we have here to help change this!
Are you a retail shop, studio/warehouse or home based?
I have a new work space in a historic district. Tin ceilings, original hardwood floors, brick walls. Pretty much doesn’t get any better!
Do you offer any services in addition to floral designs?
I love to help with the overall design. Eclectic/vintage rentals (furniture/containers) is what I find a big part of what I find doing extra on the side to just help with the overall look of events.
How do you balance the desires a modern bride when purse strings rest on the shoulders of traditional parents?
Good question! I love to incorporate 3 table designs into the mix. It makes it more special. I find that everyone can find a happy medium between it all. Tall, short, cost effective. You get the gist of it!
What tool in your toolbox can’t you live without?
That is hard to say. I have a “trick bag” that has everything from many different forms of tape to hammers. You really never know what you will need on site to make something work!
What’s your favorite flower?
Plumeria by far! After doing my cousins wedding (it was a must to have due to sentimental reasons) it quickly became my favorite flower. When I get to order it, I anxiously wait with my face at the door waiting for it to arrive!
Anything else you’d like to share with Flirty Fleurs followers?
There are plenty of weddings to be had every year! Make friends with all your fellow vendors. I gather so much inspiration from so many!
