How did you start your business?
I’ve always had a thing for wedding and event decor/design. My favorite thing about attending weddings when I was young, was getting to seeing the brides dress, and all of the decor and flowers! A few years ago, I started an event design business with my best friend, Jenn. After making arrangements here and there for a few events, (and even a friends wedding!) I fell in love with floral design and decided to branch out and start my own floral business!
What is your design aesthetic?
My style is really kind of all over the place – it really does depend on what the bride wants. But one thing is for sure, I hate using “fillers” in my designs. And being pretty new in the industry, I am constantly finding amazing new varieties of flowers to work with – so I’d say I’m still trying to establish my “signature style”. But to answer the question – I’d say my style is pretty trendy, modern, lush and always romantic! I also love monochromatic, and monobotanical designs! (It’s the minimalist in me!)
What inspires you?
I read a lot of design, floral & wedding magazines and blogs, so I’m really inspired by new trends that are out there. But when it comes time for me to design for weddings, I really go off of the brides vision, and then put my own spin on it with unique details & little touches of something unexpected.
What are the trends, flowers & colors that are unique to your region?
I’ve had brides with ALL sorts of color palettes, and inspirations for their weddings! But I have to say that I find myself designing a lot with greys & silvers as accent colors [more so than golds or warmer metallics]. I use a lot of dusty miller and silver brunia berries. They are the perfect cool compliment to any modern color palette!
Are you a retail shop, studio/warehouse or home based?
I run my business out of my home. Since I design mostly for weddings, and I’m not quite that busy right now, it doesn’t make sense for me to rent out a studio or retail space. So I’ve converted my trusty garage into my work/storage space and it’s working out perfectly for me right now! As my business grows, I’ll start looking into a small studio space – I can’t wait to have a space of my own to meet with brides!
Do you offer any services in addition to floral designs?
For brides and clients who need a little extra input, I love helping with overall event styling. I can help you narrow down all the choices of linens, tableware, colors, fabrics, etc… It can be overwhelming, so it’s really nice to have someone help you out to make sure that the design of your wedding or event is cohesive and all the different elements come together perfectly!
What does your toolbox look like?
I’ve got all the basics in there – knives, clippers, wire cutters, floral tape/glue, double-sided tape, wire, pins, tape measure… and it usually has a few scraps of ribbon or fabric leftover from my last project. 😉
What tool in your toolbox can’t you live without?
At the moment, my BFF is my double-sided tape!
What’s your favorite flower?
I have MANY favorites, it’s really hard to pick just one! But I have to say that Peonies are on the top of my list… They are just so gorgeous, frilly, girly, BIG, and just sexy!
Anything else you’d like to share with Flirty Fleurs followers?
I’m excited to be joining Alicia and a group of (20??) other fabulous floral designers from all across North America in NYC!! I can’t wait to meet these great gals and have a blast together in the city!!
I am very passionate about what I do – I can’t get enough 🙂 Each bride that I’ve worked with has been amazing, and each wedding unique – and I’ve learned so much, and am excited to do this for the rest of my life. [and hopefully pass it on to my kids!]
