Creating for the pure sake of Creating
Often as floral designers who are normally focused on filling orders, designing weddings, tending to business– it can be very easy to forget to stop and create for oneself on occasion.
I’ve dreamt of wearing hydrangeas for awhile. Tucked into the shade garden are 15 hydrangea plants and this summer they did extremely well and had plenty of blooms – as if to tempt me to create! So when my niece arrived in Washington for a visit I told her what I wanted to create and thankfully she has always been game for my flowering shenanigans.
How I created this look. I cut a 6′ long piece of chicken wire and rolled it into a long tube. Next I weaved greenery into the wire tube, akebia vine made up the base as it can be out of water for hours, for the second layer in went the ferns. The greenery added thickness and more of a grid to the base which made adding in the hydrangea very easy. To top it off I weaved in clematis vine and porcelain berry vines. I did not water tube any of the flowers as I only needed them to last for the evening of taking photographs. The hydrangeas had been sprayed with Crowning Glory.
If you wanted to make something like this and needed it to last longer I would suggest hydrating the hydrangeas and letting them firm up in the cooler overnight, plus, water tube them.
