Visiting The Sun Valley Group’s location in Arcata, California was such a treat! My mother joined me for a tour of this amazing facility given to us by Doug. Thanks, Doug! I’ve toured a few different growers/wholesalers and can honestly say this is the largest one I’ve ever been to – HUGE! Laid out very nicely to maximize productivity. We started in the tulip greenhouse where Doug showed us how they plant the bulbs, store them in the largest freezers I’ve ever seen, then move them to the largest greenhouses I’ve seen. The cool ocean air breeze circulates over the flowers in the greenhouse providing the fresh air. Men & women working hard to tend to the flowers, then packing them up and sending them to the processing room. From processing room to the coolers where they are pulled for orders and packed then sent to the last cooler where they are prepped to be placed on air conditioned trucks. The majority of the flowers are trucked to their destinations across North America. When necessary they are trucked 5 hour south to San Francisco International Airport and flown to their final destination.
Flowers grown at the Arcata location are primarily tulips and lilies, quite a few irises, freesia & hyacinths. Mostly cool weather bulb flowers and they do grow these year round. The average high temperature in Arcata is 65-68 degrees in summer!
Their other location is down south in Oxnard, CA where they grow more outdoor crops such as solidago, delphinium, snapdragons, asters and gerbera daisies to name a few.
