My Favorite Gardens

Sharing five of my favorite flower gardens to visit, wonderful places to gather inspiration and be surrounded by immense beauty. The gardens are located in America, Canada, The Netherlands, and England.

Butchart Gardens
Victoria, Canada
The manicured sunken garden at Butchart Gardens is one of a kind. To be on the upper section of the garden and looking down onto the winding paths and perfectly manicured flower beds is an impressive sight. I am also a big fan of the rose gardens and recommend visiting when the roses are in bloom.

Keukenhof Gardens
The Netherlands
Perhaps my favorite garden of all, I first visited here in 2011 at the suggestion of a friend. I had no idea what was in store, no idea I was about to view the most beautiful, large garden filled to the brim with bulb flower displays, floral arrangements, and variety displays. I’ve now visited the gardens twice and can only anticipate future visits!

Lotusland
Montecito, California
37 acres of amazing landscaping and gardens are what’s in store with a visit to Lotusland. This stunning garden is located in Montecito, California, just south of Santa Barbara.

Roozengaarde
Mount Vernon, Washington
I had no idea what to expect the first time I visited Roozengaarde and I most certainly wasn’t expecting such a glorious display of tulips. A truly pleasant surprise when I realized how many beautiful displays of tulips, daffodils, and muscari they had tucked in behind their garden walls. The tulips festival takes place each April and I highly recommend a visit.

David Austin Roses
Albrighton, Wolverhampton, United Kingdom
Located in the English Countryside are the beautiful gardens of David Austin Roses. The gardens are behind brick walls giving it a secret garden feel. I could barely contain my excitement as I turned each corner to discover more perfectly laid out rose gardens. We visited just before the gardens were in full bloom, I do hope to make it back there one day when the roses are in full bloom.

Have you been to any of the above gardens? Which are your favorites and why? Do you have gardens to suggest I and others visit? Please leave your suggestions in the comments – I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Russian River Rose Company

Located in Healdsburg, California is a great little rose garden and nursery called Russian River Rose Company. They have over 600 roses included in their collection! One spring day my mother and I made a visit to the gardens, we dilly-dallied about the paths in the display gardens (I like saying dilly-dallied), we quite enjoyed viewing the large selection of roses in bloom – so many sizes and colors. And, oh, the rose scent that was just wafting in the air, it truly added to the experience! We walked around on the garden paths that surround the owners’ personal home and then down the side of the property where rose arches were packed full of thick climbing rose plants in full bloom. They also had quite a few of their rose bushes available for purchase, along with a nice collection of Irises. Every April and May on Saturdays & Sundays they open up their display gardens to the public, so be sure to stop by if you are in the area.

Here are some of the pictures I took while my mother and I perused the gardens-

Ganna Walska Lotusland

After three glorious, and flower filled days with the Florabundance Inspirational Design Days & Chapel Designers Conference – a group of us gathered and visited Lotusland in Montecito, California.
A special thank you to Laura Cogan of Passionflower for organizing the outing. Lotusland is closed for tours until February 19th, but Laura spoke with them and organized a special trip for us flower lovers!
I’ve visited a good amount of Botanic Gardens, and have to say that I was absolutely blown away by Lotusland – it is now my favorite garden! It’s huge and the story behind it is tantalizing and fascinating. Better yet, the lady behind it is fascinating – married 6 times by the age of 59. Last divorce was in 1946 and she lived at Lotusland until her passing in 1984 at the age of 96. Seems she traded in the husbands for plants! Well, she really did trade in jewels so she’d have the funds to expand one of the gardens. You can read more about Ganna here and here.
Lotusland sits on 37 acres in the heart of Montecito, California. 26 of those 37 acres are under cultivation, with 14 gardens featured. I kept thinking I’d pick a favorite garden until I rounded the next corner and had my breath taken away again.
I’d highly suggest visiting Lotusland next time you are in the area, a visit lasts about 2 hours and you will feel like you’ve been transported to a Utopia.
