United By Design, By Joseph Massie

Florabundance Design Days & Chapel Designers Conference - Joseph Massie

Joseph Massie

Last January while at The Chapel Designer & Florabundance Inspirationdal Design Days Event I had the pleasure of meeting Joseph Massie, who had flown in from England. Now I’ve been a fan of Joe’s for quite sometime, really ever since seeing that dress created from Red Rose Petals – you know the one I’m talking about, right? Well, I was quite excited to spend some time with Joe and watch him do his thing —

Florabundance Design Days & Chapel Designers Conference - Joe Massie's Installation

I asked Joe what inspired him to make this art piece –
“It all really started with Holly’s invitation to come out to SB to be a part of the conference. Holly had seen some of my art pieces previously, and we thought it could add a nice twist to the event to have something a little different for the designers. We started brain storming ideas, thinking of themes, and naturally, we were led to thinking about the conference, and ultimately about connection ~ about how we were all coming together for this event, all participating, and how we’re all always learning and developing as we go.

I suggested working with circles ~ symbolic for connection and continuation, and poppies were a natural fit as they can be so different in colour, energy and in what they say, but still they’re all the same flower ~ which fitted really well with our ethos for the work. The poppies also fitted as we were in SB, and although the poppies we used weren’t the actual official state flower, it was a nice touch to work with them ~ a nod to our environment as it were. The wheat weaving technique fitted beautifully with both the poppies and our connection theme ~ and it was also practical to teach based on budget and time restrictions. We needed something that we could build up relatively quickly (as we only had half a day with the participants) but something that everyone could contribute to equally.

If I had to sum it up in a sentence or two, ‘United by Design’ was a true collaboration from every participant who attended the conference. We supplied the original idea and the technical guidance, but frankly this work could not have been constructed by one person alone. It’s a work literally made from connection, equality, growth and contribution, which I feel was reflective of the energy from the group. ”

The Chapel Designers & Florabundance Design Days 2014

Two weeks ago today 58 floral designers from around the world gathered for 3 flower filled and information packed days in Santa Barbara, California. We gathered to learn more about building and operating our businesses and to push our creative talents with a plethora of flowers at our fingertips.

Holly Chapple, the founder of Chapel Designers, gathered together an impressive list of presenters – the UK’s hottest young designer, Joseph Massie; the Queen of Woodlands design, Francoise Weeks; San Francisco’s much sought after designer, Nancy Liu Chin; and the four of them lead 2 days of splendid hands-on floral design workshops; on the business discussion day I led a discussion on Online Presences (including websites, blogs & social media) and Courtenay Lambert led a fantastic discussion about ordering & pricing.

The event took place at Sunstone Vineyards and Winery in Santa Ynez Valley, with lovely views of the valley – the perfect location to get our creative juices flowing! Holly instructed the participants on how to design a loosely styled hand-tied bridal bouquet. Francoise taught how to create awe-inspiring head pieces. Nancy designed four tablescapes to share a variety of styles with the designers, and then got everyone involved in designing with her. Joe designed an art installation with the purpose of building and emphasizing the unity between all the designers that participated in the workshop.

Of course, Joost and his team at Florabundance provided us with the most beautiful flowers. We had the pleasure of designing with gorgeous poppies, anemones, lisianthus and garden roses! Plus, textures galore – pieris japonica, Chocolate lace, and privet berries to name a few.

Thought I’d share some photos of the event and all the fun that was had! (I will be refraining from posting the final installations for now as those have been submitted for publication.)

Chapel Designers – NYC 2013

For those of you who are thinking – what does it mean to be a Chapel Designer anyway? Well, I’ve asked two of my flower friends to share their thoughts on what it means to them to be a Chapel Designer, this is what they have to say:

Becoming a Chapel Designer has been an inspiration for myself and my business. Our business has been refocused and invigorated, we can’t wait to see what lies ahead for us and know that the other Chapel Designers are there to help us along the way. The amount of priceless advice I have received since becoming a Chapel designer is invaluable. The investment we made has already been returned and we can’t wait for NYC!

Chapel Designers studying in a special workshop – Virginia 2013

It’s hard for me to put into words what it means to be a Chapel Designer. The friendships that I have gained this past year since I became a Chapel Designer are really priceless, not to mention the amazing support everyone gives one another 24×7. We support, encourage, and sympathize with one another daily. We’ve all been there (or will soon be there) and it’s such a relief to know that I’m not walking this journey alone.

I’m constantly learning from the Chapel Designers through our forum. I don’t think a week has gone by where I haven’t learned something whether it’s a new technique, a mechanic, or a better way to run my business.

Joining the Chapel Designers has been a game changer for me this past year. It has opened so many doors for me that I frankly never even knew existed. The Conference in NYC this past year was absolutely incredible. The speakers Holly brought in were so gracious and down to earth. I was thankful that they didn’t mind sharing the glamorous and not-so-glamorous parts to this industry. As great as they all were, the times I treasured and learned the most from were the round-table discussions where we were free to share and discuss our businesses openly, as a family of designers and business owners.

Holly Chapple is such a gracious and kind woman. She is also one of the most ethical people I have ever met. You can’t help but love her!!! I really can’t say enough about her or the Chapel Designers.

Still need an extra little nudge to Jump In? Read this note from Holly.
I hope you’ll join us for one of these conferences in 2014, don’t you want to be friends with the designers seen in these photos?!

Florabundance Inspirational Design Days, Day 2

On Day 2 of the conference there were two big design sessions. One session was led by Ian Prosser and it was to decorate two ceremony locations, one rustic and one elegant. The other session was led by Holly Chapple and it was to create a tablescape for the reception table.

We’ll start with a look at the Ceremony session led by Ian. Ian broke the students into three groups. Group one worked on the garden canopy and group two worked on the aisle decoration for the ‘elegant’ ceremony site. The third group designed the chuppah for the ‘rustic’ ceremony.

The group designing the garden canopy decided on an ombre effect for their design. Aren’t the garden roses and orchids just gorgeous??

The bouquet that Chuck and I designed complemented the ‘elegant’ ceremony site, the bouquet was comprised of orchids and jasmine vines. You can see a bit of the aisle decor in the background..

The ‘rustic’ ceremony was designed with bright colors; garden roses, tulips and clematis.

Holly led the students in designing the reception tablescape. This is how the table looked prior to the start design session:
