How did you start your business?
I began working in a mom and pop floral storefront in 1992. In 1999 I branched out on my own and have been creating special event décor ever since. Moss Fine Floral is a recent branding that specializes in all the workings I love.
What is your design aesthetic?
I don’t have a set design aesthetic. I tend to blend aspects of different styles into unique design concepts. I am in love with texture and that tends to show up in most of my work.
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by my clients, my colleagues, catalogs/magazines and the internet on a regular basis. BUT, the 4 distinct seasons that are experienced in the Midwest are most influential.
What are the trends, flowers & colors that are unique to your region?
I don’t know that the Midwest has any unique trends. Internet images from all over the country seem to influence my clients. I’m seeing requests for coastal, mountain, north-woodsy and urban design elements which can make for a beautiful yet eclectic concept when pulled together properly.
Are you a retail shop, studio/warehouse or home based?
My meeting area is in my home but I have a workspace that is commercial. The goal is to eventually operate under one roof in a warehouse type facility.
Do you offer any services in addition to floral designs?
I am blessed with a wonderful fiancé in the event production business so am able to use his expertise in lighting and additional décor such as draping, furniture and custom builds of anything you can dream of.
What does your toolbox look like?
My toolbox is neat and tidy. I’ve learned to carry items that I never thought would come in handy!
What tool in your toolbox can’t you live without?
I have to cheat here! I can’t live without my dearly loved black handled wire cutters and always have heavy duty tape which has come in handy on Many occasions.
What’s your favorite flower?
Right now it is hands down the Cattleya Orchid. I love, love , love their vibrant colors and ruffled edges.
Anything else you’d like to share with Flirty Fleurs followers?
As Flirty Fleurs is a blog about flowers and for the florist I would like to go out on a limb and be honest about how tough this business really is. I would like to see more florists reach out and get to know their competitors. Find inspiration in one another and offer support when needed. I would like to see a group of us come together and brainstorm on what it will take to educate our clients on the real cost of flowers and how labor intensive this business really is. As florists we work extremely hard and sometimes the reward just isn’t there. I hope to see change in the near future and have begun reaching out to some of my competitors and found it very refreshing.
