Your name: Carolyn Minutillo AIFD Cfd
Your Business name: Lavender Hill LLC
Your Location: 360 Spring St. Jeffersonville, Indiana- Downtown Historic District.
How did you start your business?
Originally, back in Chicago in 1984- I moved to Southern Indiana and started my new business here in 1993
How many years have you been in business?
What is your design aesthetic?
I love a natural look, letting the curves of the flowers and foliage dictate placement when possible. I love texture and feel using the right texture and colors can greatly enhance even the simplest design. I have learned to truly understand and implement the principles and elements of design. Having a definite knowledge of them makes designing for any reason with any products easier, because you know why something should work or if something is out of balance.
What inspires you?
Textures, color, containers, art and antiques, to name a few; and other really creative designers. I love looking at Pintrest and then going to the pin’s source- a florist’s blog, photographer’s website. I follow all types of people and art.
What are the trends, flowers & colors that are unique to your region?
We’re located just across the Ohio river north of Louisville, Kentucky. With that, we have some of that southern influence in foliage- people here love their magnolia foliage and Fleur de lis are a very popular design in decor. Red roses and stargazer lilies are very popular during ‘Derby Season’ and a MUST to be included in design at that time of the year. Coming up with a new way to design with them is the fun part. Iris are also a local favorite. For weddings, brides are favoring quite a bit of navy this year along with purples and clover. Fresh combos of green and white are always popular as are raspberry tones. Favorite wedding flower requests are calla, roses, orchids, peony, hydrangea and a new love- fugi mums.
Are you a retail shop, studio/warehouse or home based?
My shop is a free standing retail location with lots of windows and natural light. We’re in the downtown historic district.
Do you offer any services in addition to floral designs?
We do have unique cards and gift items, custom silk designs, local hand made jewelry and original art as well as rental props for weddings and events and also offer invitations.
What does your toolbox look like?
It is a large black canvas crafting bag with lots of pockets. Not too big, not too small.
What tool in your toolbox can’t you live without?
Sharp scissors and pruners, u-glu, business cards and, don’t laugh- a couple of panty liners- They’re perfect if you get an unexpected cut- better than a band aid, just hold in place with oasis tape and a much better conversation piece.
What’s your favorite flower?
That’s like picking a favorite child- but I do love orchids, peony, anemone, ranunculus and lily of the valley.
Anything else you’d like to share with Flirty Fleurs followers?
If you’re just starting out, be patient. Educate yourself, read, collect photos of beautiful design and practice, practice, practice. Learn the principles and elements of design. Once you understand them, the designing end will be easier. Network. Pair yourself with other positive, artistic people. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and be willing to share. Save your money as you make it and reinvest in your business. Be realistic and know you will not have a paycheck for a while- so start small, be patient and grow your business. Don’t forget to say ‘Thank-you’ to the people who support and encourage you. When the time comes to move your business out from your home or work space into something larger, be smart about it but also be brave- you have to take the first step in order to move ahead.
